State Police Respond to Refinery Explosion

(Gallup, NM)—At 9 A.M. today 2 explosions shook the Giant Industries, Inc. refinery east of Gallup. All indications are that these blasts were accidental and not an act of terrorism. The explosions and fires that followed occurred in the alkaline unit where gasoline is produced. Four employees were seriously injured by the blast and were transported to Rehoboth Memorial Christian Hospital and then to University Hospital in Albuquerque. They are identified as Billy Moore, Mike Saunders, Vincent Azua and Phillip Brown. Two others, Kerry Vandever and David Larry, were slightly injured during the fire suppression effort. They were treated and released at the scene.

Giant Industries, Inc. fire and medical personnel responded immediately and started rescue and fire suppression activities. The company ambulance transported the seriously injured to the regional hospital. Additional McKinley County fire fighting and medical/rescue units arrived to assist the fire fighting efforts. The nearby Pilot Truck Stop was evacuated for several hours as a precaution.

The plant was shut down, depressurized and has since been stabilized. Excess gas/vapor was vented to a controlled and directed burn area away from the blast site so some flames may be visible.

Giant Industry Inc. officials say that there will be little or no disruption to the supply of gasoline to consumers.
