STATE POLICE UNVEIL NEW STATEWIDE
TOLL FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER (888) 442 - NMSP (6677)
(SANTA FE, NM) – The New Mexico
State Police are proud to release the latest attempt at continuing their efforts
in Community Policing; a statewide toll-free telephone number (888) 442-NMSP
(6677). The new telephone number has been established in an effort to make the
department more accessible to the citizens of New Mexico and those passing through.
“The idea behind the introduction of the toll free number was to give
the citizens of New Mexico a telephone number to reach us twenty-four hours
a day to report crime”, Chief Carlos Maldonado of the State Police said.
“We believe that it is critical to the success of our mission to make
ourselves as available to the public as possible.”
The toll-free telephone number may be used to report a crime that is in progress,
or to call in a tip on a crime that has already occurred. The information will
be received twenty-four hours a day by a dispatcher then forwarded to the responsible
area of the state for immediate follow-up by an officer or agent. Unfortunately,
due to budgetary constraints at this time, there is no money to reward persons
reporting crimes or relating tips on incidents.
Many times, an investigation can benefit from receiving a confidential tip on
a crime that has already been committed. Numerous high-profile incidents have
taken place in the last few months which would have a higher potential for solvability,
if someone would report information concerning the crimes and who may have committed
them. The State Police are facilitating an avenue for those persons with this
information to report it to law enforcement.
“As always, we are counting on the assistance of the public to fight crime
in our state. It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to do our part to
curb crime in the neighborhoods of our fine state. This new telephone number
will allow citizens to take an active roll in the detection and reporting of
crime,” Lt. Robert San Roman of the State Police stated.” He added,
“This phone number is not a number to call to check road conditions or
to obtain copies of reports, but rather a tool for people to utilize to assist
us in the fight against crime. It is important to note that the toll free number
is not intended to take the place of 911, but rather to supplement it”.
The types of incidents that we are hoping to receive information from the public
include but are not limited to the following:
