District 5
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Serving the Counties of
Bernalillo, Valencia, Socorro, Sandoval, Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos,
Rio Arriba & Taos
"Our New Mexico Highways"
MTD District Five is located in the north-central part of the state;
one of the most scenic and historical areas of the state. We have the
best of both worlds; a wide variety of things to do in a large metropolitan
area, and within an hour or two, one can be far away from civilization
enjoying the many excellent recreational opportunities in our national
forests.
|
 |
Our goal in District Five is to ensure that everyone traveling our highways
is able to do so in the safest motoring environment possible.
Located in Robert Rosenbloom Building in Albuquerque, with a satellite
office in Santa Fe, located at the Law Enforcement Academy. Both Los
Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories are located within this area. |
 |
District Five officers are tasked with conducting pre-trip
safety inspections on radioactive waste shipments from Los Alamos to the
WIPP site in Carlsbad.
There are 3 sergeants and 14 Patrolman assigned to the District. Of
these, 1 Sergeant and 4 Patrolmen cover Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Taos
counties. |
 |
Due to the high traffic volume, we experience a higher crash
rate between commercial and non-commercial motor vehicles. Our main high
crash areas are in the Tijeras Canyon area east of Albuquerque, the Rio
Puerco area west of Albuquerque, and the Santa Fe/Pojoaque corridor, and
of course, the freeways within the Albuquerque city limits. |
 |
I/40 and I/25 come together in Albuquerque, the largest
city in the district.
In the northern part of the District, we have the Santa Fe/Pojoaque
corridor on US 84/285. Tens of thousands of commercial and non-commercial
motor vehicles travel through these highways daily. |
 |
MTD officers are assigned to patrol these areas and strictly
enforce state and federal laws in regard to safety, speeding, aggressive
driving, and all other violations that contribute to crashes. |
 |
In addition, our officers concentrate heavily on highway
drug interdiction since the major highways that intersect our district
are known drug trafficking corridors. |
 |
Since there are no Port-of-Entry facilities in District
Five, our officers are assigned strictly to highway patrol duties. |
