Cibola County – On Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 7:40 am; New Mexico State Police Officer Steven Nunez arrived on scene of a single vehicle roll-over on Interstate 40, milepost 92. Officer Nunez, with the help of four other bystanders, they were able to lift the vehicle off the child and save her.
Upon arrival, Officer Nunez observed an eight year old girl trapped underneath the roof of a black Ford sports utility vehicle. The vehicle came to rest in such an orientation that the roof was on the dirt and wheels in the air. The vehicle was covering three quarters of the of the child’s body, who was laying face down. Officer Nunez immediately radioed for rescue.
While waiting for rescue to arrive, Officer Nunez attempted to lift the vehicle with a jack but was unable to. Officer Nunez noticed that the young girl had stopped breathing momentarily. The young girl gasped again. At that moment, Officer Nunez realized action needed to be taken immediately, or else the girl would die.
Officer Nunez waved over four bystanders who where nearby. Officer Nunez got hold of the SUV from the rear bumper and with the assistance of the other bystanders, where able to tilt the vehicle off the child and remove her safely.
The young girl was transported to UNMH via air ambulance. Last update received, the girl was in serious but stable condition.
If it wasn’t for Officer Nunez’ quick thinking and action, this young girl may of died while awaiting for emergency crews to arrive.
Every day, New Mexico State Police Officers go in service not knowing whose life they could impact or save. Officer Nunez displayed selfless service and courage going above and beyond to save the life of this young innocent girl.
