Santa Fe County-On Wednesday, June 12, 2013; New Mexico State Police lost one of its loyal and committed K-9 service dogs, Chica. Chica was fourteen years old and peacefully passed away of natural causes.
Chica served on the Department for approximately nine years and retired to the care of her handler, Sergeant Arsenio Chavez in 2010.
Chica has been described as “the most successful K-9 to serve in the State Police ranks” according to State Police K-9 Sergeant, Arsenio Chavez.
As part of Chica’s successful career with State Police, she was integral in the seizure of 10,340 pounds of marijuana; 216 pounds of methamphetamine; 10.5 pounds of heroin; and 202 pounds of cocaine.
Chica’s legacy and impeccable accomplishments will live on. She is gone, but will never be forgotten.
