Socorro County- On Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at approximately 3:37 pm; New Mexico State Police officers responded to the scene of a two vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near mile marker 167, south of Bernardo, NM. The crash involved two vehicles. One was a green Toyota Camry and the second was a white Chevy truck. The white Chevy truck, suspect vehicle, fled the scene and was located approximately six miles north of the crash scene.
Based on the officer’s investigation, it appeared as both vehicles were traveling northbound on I25 in the right hand lane. The white Chevy rear-ended the green Camry. The Camry was occupied with four people. Due to the impact, a rear passenger was killed. She was identified as Birthe Rasmussen Moehring (65) of Berlin, Germany. The other three passengers did not have serious injuries.
The driver of the white Chevy truck was identified as Keith Bailey (37) of Lemitar, NM. State Police arrested Mr. Bailey and charged him with: Homicide by Vehicle (3rd degree felony); Leaving the Scene of an Accident (4th degree felony); and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor or Drugs (5th offense). A warrant was obtained for a blood draw on Mr. Bailey, who showed signs of intoxication when officers made contact with him.
Mr. Bailey was booked into the Socorro County Detention Center on his charges.
