Socorro County- On Sunday, September 1, 2013 at approximately 7:23 am; Officers from the New Mexico State Police responded to the scene of a single vehicle crash on US 60 near mile marker 123. It is approximately ten miles west of Socorro NM. The crash involved a 1998 Dodge Truck driven by 42 year old Fred Apachito, of Magdalena, NM.
Initial investigation by New Mexico State Police determined that Mr. Apachito and eight other passengers in the vehicle were traveling west bound on US 60. Mr. Apachito fell asleep and the vehicle crossed onto the east bound lane of traffic. The vehicle then struck a culvert on the shoulder of the roadway. This caused the vehicle to roll once.
Of the nine occupants, three were killed; three were airlifted to UNMH in Albuquerque NM in critical condition; and remaining three are at Socorro General Hospital in stable to serious condition.
The occupants killed have been identified as: Fred Apachito; Delrena Apachito (25) of Magdalena NM; and Shaijon Apachito (3) of Magdalena. Shaijon (pronounced Shay-Jon) was Delrena’s son. It was also confirmed that Delrena Apachito was five months pregnant. Fred was the father and grandfather to both Delrena and Shaijon.
One male (twenties) and two female (ages two and fourteen) were transported to UNMH. Three female occupants (twenties and late forties) were transported to Socorro General Hospital.
Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor to this crash, rather driver falling asleep. None of the occupants were utilizing seat belts.
