Lincoln County- On Friday, August 30, 2013 at approximately 5:20 pm; Officers from the New Mexico State Police responded to the scene of a single vehicle crash on US 285 near mile marker 176 within Lincoln County. It is approximately sixty miles north of Roswell NM. The crash involved a 2003 Lincoln Navigator driven by 34 year old Stephanie Delara, of Andrews, TX.
Initial investigation by New Mexico State Police determined that Stephanie Delara and her two daughters (5 year old Jolysa Cerezo and 3 year old Deveney Cerezo) were traveling northbound on US 285. For some unknown reason, Stephanie Delara drifted off the roadway into the center dirt median; then over corrected to the right abruptly causing the Lincoln Navigator to overturn multiple times.
Emergency personnel extricated Stephanie Delara from the vehicle and she was airlifted from the scene to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM, where she remains in critical condition.
5 year old Jolysa Cerezo was ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to her injuries while being airlifted to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM.
3 year old Deveney Cerezo was transported to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell, NM by ambulance with non- life threatening injuries and was later reunited with family members.
As a result of this crash, US 285 northbound was closed for approximately two (2) hours while the crash scene was investigated and subsequently cleared.
Alcohol and speed are suspected as contributing factors in this crash. Seatbelt restraints were used by the driver, but the two children were not restrained.
