San Juan County – On Tuesday, May 14, 2013; Farmington State Police stopped a White Chevrolet Malibu passenger car on US 550, mile post 116. The driver was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and drug possession. The initial reason for the traffic stop was for speeding. On Wednesday, May 15, 2013; the same officer conducted a traffic stop on US 550, mile post 139 on a blue GMC Sonoma truck. The driver was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and DWI (2nd offense-aggravated). This arrest was a result of the driver being pulled over for speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the vehicle stopped on May 14, 2013 was identified as Victor Gonzales (34) of Albuquerque NM. Gonzales was driving a vehicle that was reported stolen by Albuquerque Police Department. The investigation also revealed Gonzales was also in possession of large amount of marijuana, scales and packaging paraphernalia. Gonzales was arrested for Unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, intent to distribute, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The driver of the vehicle stopped on May 15, 2013 was identified as . This investigation revealed Benally was driving a stolen vehicle reported out of the Farmington Police Department. Further investigation revealed that Benally was intoxicated. He was arrested for unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, DWI 2nd offense- aggravated, driving on a suspended and or revoked drivers license, speeding and not wearing his seat belt.
State Police Officers in San Juan County have been working Project 550 overtime. This particular grant targets traffic violations including DWI, and seat belt violations. Since this grant has been implemented, District 10 State Police Officers have seen a large reduction in traffic fatalities on US 550.
