Sandoval County- On Saturday, June 22, 2013 at approximately 3:22 am; a State Police Officer on routine patrol came in contact with a stolen vehicle. The Officer was patrolling north bound I25 at mile post 238, when he observed a four door silver passenger car traveling at very slow rate of speed on the interstate. The Officer proceeded to run the plate on his Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) through the National Crime and Information Center (NCIC). The return showed a vehicle that had been stolen June 19, 2013.
The Officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and pursued with a felony stop. When contact was made with the driver, he (the driver) asked the reason for the stop and was advised he would be informed momentarily. The driver closed the door and sped off in the vehicle. The driver was later identified as Matthew Hothan (29) of Placitas NM.
The pursuit ensued at speeds up to 60 mph. The vehicle exited at the south Bernalillo exit (240) and traveled onto South Hill Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then made a right turn on Richardson Drive; a right on Athena Avenue; and another right on Melissa Road where it came to a stop near a dirt ditch bank.
The driver and numerous passengers exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The Officer pursued Mr. Hothan down the ditch bank. Mr. Hothan jumped into the ditch that had a shallow stream of water. The water was approximately up to Mr. Hothan’s knee. Mr. Hothan complained that his ankle hurt and was having a difficult time exiting the steep embankment. Mr. Hothan was ultimately pulled out of the water and arrested without incident.
Mr. Hothan is charged with: 1. Receiving/transferring a stolen vehicle; 2. Felon in possession of a handgun; 3. Aggravated fleeing; 3. Possession of burglary tools; 4. Aggravated DWI (3rd). Mr. Hothan was booked into the Sandoval County Detention Center on his charges.
