Chaves County- On October 21, 2013 at 8:57 am; A New Mexico State Police Investigation’s Bureau Sergeant came upon a motorists assist involving a female subject standing on the side of US 285 at mile post 87 (NB). The Sergeant made contact with the woman. The Sergeant was advised by the woman her significant other was further up the road.
The Sergeant proceeded to the location where the male subject was in his vehicle. As the Sergeant activated her emergency equipment, the male subject drove away and a pursuit ensued at 9:04 am. Uniformed officers were called for backup and upon arrival, marked units took lead in the pursuit.
Ultimately, the suspect’s vehicle tires stuck a set of spike strips, deflating the tires. The pursuit went on for approximately four miles.
As the vehicle came to a stop (US 285 MP 91 NB), the driver that was being pursued, produced a weapon and began firing upon officers. New Mexico State Police Officers, as well as Chaves County Sheriff’s Deputies returned fire at the subject.
A NMSP Sergeant was shot, and was transported to the local hospital for his injuries and is currently being evaluated.
The driver of the vehicle that was being pursued also received gunshot wounds and has succumbed to his injuries.
