ALBUQUERQUE-New Mexico State Police Chief Robert Shilling and Department of Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Gorden Eden were on hand Tuesday April 9th at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico as New Mexico State Police were presented with a check for $15,000. The donation from the Heart Hospital of New Mexico Foundation is being used to purchase new pads and batteries for automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
The State Police were able to match the donation from the Foundation allowing one hundred of the AED’s to be deployed around the state in NMSP units.
The AED’s are about the size of a laptop computer and can deliver an electrical shock through the use of the defibrillator to the victim of a heart attack. State Police will roll out these units first to its officers in rural areas, where waiting time for EMTs to arrive becomes a critical factor in whether a heart attack victim lives or dies. AED’s increase the chances of saving a life if and when a cardiac related emergency occurs.
