Chimayo Man Fatally Shot During Assault

Rio Arriba County– At 9:45 p.m. last night, New Mexico State Police Officers responded to a shots fired call on State Road 76 in Chimayo, NM. Officers arrived to find two male subjects on the dirt road near the residence.

After securing the scene, officers identified the two men as Hector Martinez (29) and his father Zacharias Martinez (56) both of Chimayo. Both men had been shot with a small caliber weapon.

Hector Martinez succumbed to the gunshot wound at the scene, while his father Zacharias Martinez was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper leg area.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to take over the investigation and process the scene. Roy Martinez (54) of Chimayo was arrested and charged with Voluntary Manslaughter, Aggravated Battery with a weapon enhancement and Tampering with Evidence.

Roy Martinez told investigators that the two men were assaulting his nephew when he shot them. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
