De-Baca County – On Thursday, May 30, 2013, New Mexico State Police arrested William Caleb West (20) of Ft. Sumner NM, in regards to the death of 21 year old Anthony Sandoval. Mr. Sandoval was found deceased inside his motel room at the Coronado Motel in Ft. Sumner, NM on May 19, 2013.
On May 17, 2013, Mr. West and Mr. Sandoval were involved in a physical altercation at 4032 Pecan Drive, Ft. Sumner, NM. The physical altercation occurred during an argument overfive dollars Mr. West believed was owed to him by Mr. Sandoval for the alcohol he had consumed while at a party at the above described address.
After refusing to give Mr. West five dollars, Mr. West struck Mr. Sandoval in the face. Mr. Sandoval fell back, striking the rear right side of his head on the concrete floor. According to witnesses, Mr. Sandoval lost consciousness for several minutes after impacting the concrete floor. While Mr. Sandoval was unconscious, West went through Sandoval’s pockets, removed his wallet and took five dollars from it.
Mr. West then walked away, only to come back to Mr. Sandoval’s location and give the five dollars back to another subject attending to Mr. Sandoval.
When Mr. Sandoval awoke, a friend took him back to his room at the Coronado Motel and dropped him off at approximately 11:00 p.m. on May 17, 2013. Mr. Sandoval had refused medical attention.
In the evening of May 19, 2013; a welfare check was conducted on Mr. Sandoval, as none of his acquaintances had heard from him since being dropped off. Access was made into Mr. Sandoval’s room, where he was found deceased.
Mr. West has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder; Robbery; Giving Alcohol to Minors; and Conspiracy. Following his arrest, Mr. West was released to the De Baca County Jail on a $200,000 dollar cash/surety bond.
