Bernalillo County – On December 27, 2013, New Mexico State Police became involved in a pursuit of an erratic vehicle traveling northbound on I-25 near Paseo Del Norte at approximately 10:42 pm.
At approximately 10:30 pm, the Albuquerque Police Department engaged in a pursuit involving subjects that were shop lifting from the Wal-Mart located on Carlisle just north of Menaul. Upon further investigation, it was revealed the vehicle was stolen. The pursuit ensued onto I-40 then onto I-25 northbound. It was then confirmed there were three subjects in the vehicle.
APD officers stopped the active pursuit and followed at a safe distance, as they were assisted by Metro-1 (air support).
As the stolen vehicle was traveling northbound, it was speeding and passing vehicles on the shoulder of the Interstate. By chance, it passed a NMSP officer who was conducting patrol operations in the area. The erratic driver caught the officer’s attention. As the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the vehicle continued to flee. Unknown to the officer at the time was that APD was following behind the vehicle as well. The officer radioed in the vehicle and license plate to State Police dispatch and was advised the vehicle was stolen.
The pursuit continued northbound onto SR 165 and then east to Placitas. NMSP pursued as APD provided backup with the pursuit.
At approximately 11:12 p.m. the pursuit ended on SR 165 near mile post 10. Three passengers fled the vehicle on foot. Once on foot NMSP and APD officers were fired upon by one of the fleeing passengers. At no time did NMSP or APD officers return fire. No officers discharged their weapons during this whole incident, nor were any officers injured.
With the assistance of Metro-1 and APD, two suspects came out of the woods and surrendered without incident to officers. The third suspect was observed by Metro-1 lying in a prone position without movement. The NMSP TACT team closed in on the subject and he was confirmed to be deceased. Preliminarily, it appears from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head; however, the body has been transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Steven Fisher (25) of Albuquerque NM was arrested on an unrelated warrant. Next of kin notification is still pending for the deceased subject. Information on the third subject will be released at a later time.
This case is still under investigation by agents with the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
Appreciation goes out to the Albuquerque Police Department and their officers, as well as to their aircraft (Metro-1) for assisting with this highly dangerous situation to innocent civilians and officers.
